A Call for Prayer

Wiley Drake, former Vice President of the Southern Baptist Convention, has issued a call for imprecatory prayer against my good friends and colleagues at Americans United for Separation of Church and State -- Joe Conn and Jeremy Leaming.

I am fully convicted that Drake is completely misguided to offer imprecations against these staunch advocates of both religious liberty and the golden rule, I intend to make it a point to pray daily at 9:00 AM CST for God to bless Joe Conn, Jeremy Leaming, Barry Lynn, Rob Boston and everyone else at Americans United.

I'll also pray for Wiley Drake and his cohorts to attune their hearts more fully to that of Jesus of Nazareth who denounced every temptation to enlist civil power as a means to inaugurate his kingdom.

While I am at it, I'm going to pray for Brent Walker, Hollyn Hollman and everyone at the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty who share the mission with Americans United (an organization that the BJC helped found) as watchdogs over separation of church and state.

Please join me in these prayers.

And let's pray in our private prayer closets, as Jesus commanded (Matt. 6:5-13). True prayer is not for show, it's an act of worship. God has never needed people to all be on the same phone line to hear their prayers.

Calvinism + taking Jesus out of the BF & M = imprecatory prayer

Shameful. With so many other pressing issues in our country, Drake's obsession is particularly sinful.

I will join you in those prayers and re-post this on progressivebaptist.net as a call to prayer as well.

Thank you, Bruce. I was horrified when I read this story on ABP earlier today. Has the SBC really sunk this low into such a deep abyss of hatred?

As soon as I guarantee to pray at 9 a.m. every day, I know I'll be called into a 9 a.m. meeting at the office, and there goes my promise. So I won't guarantee you 9 a.m., but I WILL guarantee that I will pray several times daily for all of those freedom fighters who are under attack by the Fundamentalists - your friends at AU; Brent, Holly, and others at the BJC; you at MB of Oklahoma; David Currie at Texas Baptists Committed; and any others who come to mind.

And yes, I've already prayed for Wiley Drake and his cohorts - I've seen God work unimaginable miracles in hearts (including my own) over the years, and I believe that God hasn't given up on Wiley Drake or Paige Patterson, et al., any more than he gave up on me when I turned my back on Him as a college sophomore almost 40 years ago. Neither should we give up on these people. While they seek to condemn, let us always seek to redeem. But let us always speak the truth and oppose such perversions of the Gospel as peddled by Wiley Drake.

Thanks for the good word, Bruce.

Truly the Pharisees who stand on street corners have taken over.

How amazingly unlike what I read in the Gospels. Jesus told us to pray for our enemies but not this way!

St Nicolai of Zica has a beautiful prayer that I will use to pray for the situation. Well worth a Google.

A Prayer for One's Enemies - by St Nicolai of Zica

Drake is terribly wrong for asking God that his enemies will overcome the most horrible things.

In Matthew 5: 38-48 Jesus says in his learnings:
5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. "If any man will sue thee at the law ..." Don't defend yourself in court.
5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; "Love your enemies."
5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?
5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Instead of turning his other cheek or giving his cloak, Drake wants an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. Well he shouldn't do that either of course.

But by cursing his enemies he's in fact, asking Evil to do so. God WILL NOT curse AU. Drake's will for evil to strike AU comes from a feeling of Hate. Such a feeling belongs to the side of Evil.

If Drake thinks God will spread Evil, then he doens't know who He is. God is Love so love your enemies. Pray for them. Because they might be wrong.

I'll pray for Drake. He has done wrong for linking God with Evil things. But I'll forgive him. Because he is unknowing.
