A Gospel that is Too Hot to Handle

AlterNet has posted an essay by Jeanette Batz Cooperman that is the most insightful discussion of the banned UCC ad to date. Here's a link:

The Compassion of Christ.

No, Jesus didn't turn people away, but he did tell them to repent, and sin no more.

Isn't he the one who said lust in our hearts is the same as adultry? Isn't he the one who said hate is the same as murder?

I saw the UCC commercial and it's wrong in it's protrayal of churches who take a stand. Even Jesus would not let a homosexual couple or adulterous couple enter and say, "It's OK, do what you want."

He's say, "Go and sin no more."

As for racism - yes, it has to be out of the church. But what's going to change us, all of us, is not pointing the finger and accusing (Isaiah 58) but loving the One who loved us enough to die on the Cross.

Jesus!
