Pay the War Debt Now

I'm no fan of Joe Lieberman, but he is proposing legislation to pay for the war in Iraq that makes sense -- a war tax.

It is immoral and unconscionable for this administration to pile up debt for it's misguided war and then hand the bill to my children and grandchildren.

A war tax is a fitting way for those of us who are not in Iraq to share in the sacrifices that are being required of our troops and their families.

At the moment, as a retired general quoted by the Christain Science Monitor said,"Marines are at war, America is at the mall."

The least we could do is pay the war debt now.

I like this idea. It would get more people involved in getting the war to end. Instituting the draft would get people involved as well, this could have a similar effect.

Martin,

I think we should add a separate line on everyone's 1040 tax return to retire this administration's war debts.

Then, every year for the next fifty years when people paid their taxes they would be reminded how important it is to vote for people who value peace more than war.

Since I object to war taxe, I couldn't pay it. I already resist paying a portion of my taxes and work to try to get a Peace Tax Fund for conscientious objectors.

What we should really do to retire this debt is tax those companies that have made money on the war: Halliburton, KBR, the "security" mercenaries, etc.
