Tom DeLay, speaking under a cloud of scandals and ethics violations, delivered a message by tape and said we have "a judiciary run amok."
The most ridiculous statement, however, came from the chief of staff of my own U.S. Senator:
"I am in favor of impeachment," Michael Schwartz, chief of staff to Senator Tom Coburn, Republican of Oklahoma, said in a panel discussion on abortion, suggesting "mass impeachment" might be needed.
You can be sure that the first judge on the list for impeachment will be Florida Judge George Greer who presided over the Terri Schiavo case. Judge Greer has already been hounded out of the membership of his Southern Baptist church.
For twenty-five years Baptist laymen have closed their eyes to what the Fundamentalists were doing to moderates within their churches. "It's just a preacher fight," they said over and over again. Well, it's surely not just a preacher fight any more.
People who divided a Christian denomination firing Seminary presidents and professors and then massively terminated career missionaries won't loose a wink of sleep over dividing a nation with "massive impeachments" of judges.

Once upon a time in a country across the ocean, they changed the names of the months as an attempt to be different from everybody else, and they named the month of July - Thermidore. This country was being led by a committee on Public Safety that thought they were making the "people" safe by sending individuals who disagreed with them to the guillotine, and the streets ran with blood. Finally in the month of Thermidore the leader of the committee told all the other members of the committee that if they didn't believe exactly as he did, they would also go to the guillotine. This event is called a Thermidorian reaction, because the other committee members finally realized that the one thing that was truly making the country un-safe was Robespierre and his unconditional desire to make everyone conform to whatever He thought was best, and that all who disagreed must die. That is when Robespierre went to the guillotine instead. I am still waiting for a Thermidorean reaction in the Southern Baptist Convention, and now in the country at large. When everyone realizes the real enemy is these men who take on the role of God and punish everyone who does not conform to their whims. By the way, isn't that what 666 symboligically means under numerology in the book of Revelations? Man proclaiming themselves God.
Fox news consistently reported that Judge Greer was kicked out of his church. That was not true...and also frustrating as that was 'useful' for many people to run with to propagate negative stereotypes.

We could have seen this coming. The "Theocratic Republicans" have a need to control all 3 branches of the government.
As to a "Thermidorean reaction": what about the CBS poll which claimed that 80% of respondents disagreed with Congress' intervention in the Schiavo case? I have seen subsequent polls - such as in USA Today - which replicate that figure.
But what I really want to comment on is how so few - if any - seem to notice the statement made by Delay in that story about removing church-state issues from judicial review. If that is allowed to happen, we would truly be but one step away from actual theocracy, if not fully in actual theocracy.
