Regarding Ratzinger

Yesterday I anxiously watched CNN to see who would be named Pope with my daughter-in-law Monica, a Roman Catholic. Before the announcement, as an outsider looking on with a little knowledge of what has been going on in Catholic theology, all I had to say about the matter was, "I hope they elect anybody but Ratzinger."

Now that Ratzinger has been elected Pope, Joan Chittister, E. J. Dionne, Norman Solomon, Frederick Clarkson, Max Blumenthal, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Bill Berkowitz , Leslie Scrivener and Greg Warner best express the wide range of reservations that many have about the new Pope.

As a non-Roman Catholic with little interest in their affairs and leadership, I have little knowledge of their internal politics. Why do you dislike Ratzinger? From the little I have read and/or heard on the news, he is theologically conservative and is very similar to John Paul. Did you dislike John Paul, too? If so, why?

Ratzinger's role in the dismissal of Hans Kung.

Bruce: You and your readers also must take Amy Sullivan's magnificent analysis at www.tnr.com into play. Hers is one of the best I have seen. And keep an eye out for any remarks Michelle Cottle, Missisiippi Baptist raised and Vandy educated also with TNR may have to say about the Ratz.
