Sociologist Paul Froese says the survey finds the stereotype that conservatives are religious and liberals are secular is "simply not true. Political liberals and conservative are both religious. They just have different religious views."Here's a link to Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion report on American Piety in the 21st Century: New Insights to the Depths and Complexity of Religion in the U.S. (74 page pdf file)

On God(s) and Politics
USA Today has published a report about framebreaking research at Baylor University that says "View of God Can Predict Values, Politics." The report says Americans have four different views of God -- Authoritarian, Benevolent, Critical or Distant. Here's a quote:

Our Friend BigDaddyWeave is singing your praises in a comment on my blog today though he got it in the wrong post. He posted in the Fight words post where it woulda been better if he had posted in my grass roots concern, What is a Baptist in Collinsville, Alabama, about the pastor's Sudnay evening Study course there. It would be an honor as well as a boost to my morale if you would comment in my collinsville Baptist post at my blog.
Here is the breaking news. Nancy Ammerman and Peter Berger both have academic papers in current issue of American Interest Magazine. As you know, unlike Goldberg and Balmer, Ammerman has consistently poohpoohed or downplayed to the point of dismissal, the alarms of folks like yourself, Don Wilkey and me that the Birch Recons have influenced SBC and through them National politics.
Just last night Richard Land, who Balmer rightly named a "counterfeit" Baptist was getting more credibility than he is due in a roundtable on PBS Newshour. I doubt Nancy could bring herself to call Land a "Counterfeit."
therein lies the problem.
I was having a conversation with a 30 something former intern of the BJC yesterday and we concurred Land is an evil man.
We both concede that we are creatures of the Fall ourselves, but the evil of Land is of a special character, like that of Mohler. And where they only miss the point, a great deal of devastation and intellectual terrorism ensues.
Collinsville Baptist is up for the final grab. It is a grassroots moment. Please keep an eye on the discussion as it evolves on my blog.
And God Speed.
