Here's one of the reasons why from "Why is the Media Downplaying our Voting Scandal?"
The stations listed as first choice by respondents and the percentage of respondents who thought the election [2004] was stolen: CNN 70%; MSNBC 65%; CBS 64%; ABC 56%; Other 56%; NBC 49%; FOX 0.5%.

If enough people to perceive elections as illegitimate, they will look for other means to change the government.
My great fear is that even if this year there is a serious reaction to the Republican majority, and people turn out to vote them out of office, we will once again find a great disparity between the exit polls and the "actual" outcome. As in 2004, this will be explained by a significant evangelical turnout.
The ingredients for an indefinite tyranny of the right wing through voter fraud are the means to do it (these are in place with electronic machines and Republican control of the process in many states, like Ohio), and a significant vocal, active minority like the evangicals that can be trotted out as an explanation for a surprising, come from behind outcome.
