Mike Huckabee.
Here's one of the reasons he gave for withdrawing from participation in the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant:
Huckabee cited the involvement of the "very, very liberal" Marian Wright Edelman, founder of the Children's Defense Fund, as an example of the liberal leaning of the gathering. When did defending the interests of children become an exclusively "liberal" issue?
When Huckabee was involved in the denominational politics of the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention, refusing to associate with moderate and liberal Baptists was understandable. Conservatives and fundamentalists think they would be defiled by associating with people of different opinions.
Huckabee is running for President of the United States of America. He can't be President of conservatives and fundamentalists only. What kind of President would limit his speeches to a mere third of the citizenry?

yeah, you were SHOCKED that this guy wouldn't show up for this, right?
I understand Gov. Huckabee's reluctance in joining in to something that he does not support. It is called standing up for what you believe in. There IS absolute truth. When you are a Bible-believing Christian, and when you know the Scriptures, you treat your "neighbors as you'd want to be treated"...with kindness, patience, and a loving, brotherly attitude. That is what being a true believer in the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ is all about, but you can not be a testimony for the Gospel and its truth if you are standing along side someone or something that contradicts it. As a believer, I would not be defiling myself(as you say) in an association like a bake sale or something like that, but when the topic or conference is the ISSUE, then it is necessary to kindly decline.
