Forget Journalism at OBU

The revolving door as journalism professor at Oklahoma Baptist University has swung again. This time OBU is being censured by the College Media Advisors.

OBU President Mark Brister continues to exercise an iron hand over the school's student newspaper.

This is not the first time that Brister has dumped a respected journalism professor on the street.

My original college major was journalism. I changed majors when I realized that course content preached truth and freedom of the press but the real world was not interested in fairness, balance or freedom. In the case of OBU I wonder just what the controversial material was that they tried to control.

I found the following paragraph from the linked article interesting:

Because OBU is a private university, founded by the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, The Bison would not normally be subject to first amendment protections, except for the fact that OBU's student handbook guarantees freedom of speech, Todd said.

I suspect that OBU might be changing their handbook in the future.
