I spend a lot of time criticizing Southern Baptists on this blog -- for good reasons.
Today I want to commend Southern Baptists for their efforts to aid the victims of hurricane Katrina. Southern Baptists, along with Cooperative Baptists, American Baptists, Progressive Baptists and National Baptists and persons of all other faiths and denominations are mobilizing efforts to provide food, clothing and shelter to refugees from the hurricane. At least during national emergencies, Southern Baptists can put aside their rigid defense of doctrinal sterility and their judgmental advocacy of moral purity to work with others in showing compassion to the victims of a natural disaster.
The Houston Chronicle reports that Second Baptist Houston is a leading partner in an "Interfaith" effort to feed the thousands of refugees that have been sent to Houston.
Perhaps this kind of cooperative effort will help fundamentalist leaders at that church and other SBC churches to realize that working with interfaith groups for the common good of the community does not mean that they have either changed or compromised their Christian convictions.
