Baptist Pastoral Letter Affirms Public Schools

The Baptist Center for Ethics has issued a Pastoral Letter Affirming Public Schools. It has been signed by scores of Baptist pastors and moderate Baptist denominational leaders. Here's a quote from an article about the letter in today's Ethics Daily:

The Baptist leaders decry anti-public school statements that identify public schools as "the enemies of God," that label the nation's school system as "a dark and decaying government school system" and that claim public schools are converting Christian children "to an anti-Christian worldview" and "urge a halt to the demonization of public schools."

"We believe Baptists should recommit themselves to public education, not as a means toward converting school children, but because it is the right thing to do," the letter says. "We believe public school children are God's children who deserve the nurture of a good society, the prospect for a good education and the equal opportunity for a good life."

The Baptist Center for Ethics has been at the forefront of moderate Baptist efforts to counteract the Southern Baptist Convention's attack upon public schools.
Here's a link to the articles they posted on their Ethics Daily website.

Here's a link to materials that they have produced to help moderate Baptist pastors and lay leaders encourage others to support public education.

Hi!

Finally, Christians are speaking out in favor or our public school system. I know it's not a perfect system, but it is also not as bad as many would have us believe. As a Christian public school teacher for 25 years, I have seen the good as well as the bad. There is more good. I truly feel that teaching is my calling, and have felt abandoned by those that should have been praying for and supporting those of us that are out there everyday, working with parents, students, coworkers, etc. that are lost. We might be the only face of Christ that they see.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

God Bless,
