Some people just don't get it. The war in Iraq was supposed to be against "terrorists" not Islam, but the mainstream media in Oklahoma can't keep the two groups separate.
A case in point is Kelly Ogle, the anchor for the CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City, who issues editorial opinions three times each day during local news coverage.
Yesterday Ogle gave his opinion about Amnesty International's allegation that Guantanamo Bay is like a Gulag. Predictably, Ogle thought the charge was "ridiculous" and asserted that we should not forget that "we're trying to win a war, not a popularity contest."
Ogle, however, couldn't pass up an opportunity to try to discredit Islam by inferring that it was her religious beliefs that prompted Irene Khan of Amnesty International to issue such an "intentionally incendiary attack on the United States."
Mentioning Khan's faith was totally superflous and irrelevant to the issue being discussed -- unless Ogle's words were designed as an "intentionally incendiary attack" on Islam.
Presumably Ogle would not expect people to discredit his opinions because he happens to be a Christian. Neither should he seek to discredit the opinions of others because they happen to profess a different faith.
There are Christians and Muslims on both sides of the controversy over Amnesty International's "Gulag" statement.

Thanks for sending me the link to your posting. I believe to fully understand someone's position it is wise to know from whence they come. The fact that she made the absurd comparison of Gitmo to a Gulag indicates to me she is not entirely objective when it comes to this issue. Right or wrong, her faith could be skewing her perception.

Since you are questioning Ogle's intentions, what are yours? This site is full of double standards.

Why is it that when some other country is doing the torturing and killing then our leadership and the MSM applaud Amnesty International for telling the truth, but when it is our country and our prisons, then it is "absurd" and "ridiuculous"?
I thank God that Amnesty International stands firmly for truth and the protection of human rights, even in the face of being called names by the Bush administration and the media talking heads.
I wish that the MSM would return to at least some level of dignity and integrity so that we could begin to trust them again. Simply parroting whatever the party in power is saying is not "news," it's propaganda. And people know it.

America has never been perfect. For over eighty years we allowed slavery and then turned a blind eye to serfdom (what else can you call share cropping and Jim Crow). The trail of tears with the Cherokee, trail of blood with the Navajo, bacteriological near extermination of the Arapaho nation, Wounded Knee, internment camps of Japanese Americans, turning away a boatload of Jews fleeing Hitler's Germany. The Mi Lai massacre. Gitmo is just going to be added to the list of America's shame. Fifty years from now some politician will offer apologies and that is supposed to absolve us of our guilt. Isn't it time we stood up to the bullies besmirching our honor and dignity and held them accountable for their crimes.
