Yesterday, the Washington Post published an editorial entitled "The Truth About Abu Ghraib" which described legislation proposed by Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsay Graham as a "rebellion of conscience and good sense." Their legislation was an amendment to the defense operations bill that would put an end to the abusive interrogation techniques being used at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. Before the administration pulled the bill to stop a vote, six Republicans Senators supported the bill.
This is one of the most damning reports I've ever seen. The Religious Right's publicly endorsed "values" President -- a man who boasts of his Christian faith before the whole world -- has his underlings working overtime to oppose the efforts of the last six Senators in his own party that still have a "conscience and good sense."
This hypocrisy is worse than the hypocrisy that Jesus denounced in the harshest terms.
When will Bobby Welch, Morris Chapman, Al Mohler, Richard Land, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson, D. James Kennedy, Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer, and all the other politically prominent ministers in this country develop a conscience and some good sense and start speaking out and using their influence to guarantee that the torture and abuse of prisoners ends?
Some day a lot of currently prominent preachers will be asking, "Lord, when did we see you naked and abused and in prison and didn't do anything to minister to you? Didn't we perform miracles in your name getting-out-the-votes to for those "strict constuctionist" judges?" And they will surely hear, "Inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it unto me." (Matthew 25:31-46)

That was a powerful ending paragraph to the post. Outstanding!
These are Christians that are allowing or promoting this kind of treatment?
I second Rob. Wow. These are the tough questions that deserve straight answers. Only then will everyone truly know whether these ministers 100% serve God... or the Administration.
For so many with a black and white world view, a grey answer won't suffice.
Hi!
Just as it took so long for these church leaders to see their hard work and compromise pay off into real political power, so it will also take a long time for them to realize or admit that they are in league with someone other than Christ. If they never come to that realization, maybe a better term for them would be "politically religious."
God Bless,

Not meaning to profane a religious blog, but a few years ago Playboy Magazine held a contest to name the religious right. They settled on the Moral Mafia. I have referred to them with this term for many of the same reasons that pb sited. 1. they are obsessed with money and power 2. they are ruthless in destroying anyone who gets in their way. 3. they are very well organized. 4. They hide behind the fact that the majority of the population is in a state of denial concerning their very existence.
Who do those that Bruce named most resemble Don Corleone? or Jesus?
Just a quick question. If we are so bent on following the teachings of Jesus, why is there so much slander in all of these comments?
Bruce,
First, I want to thank you for the swift response to my comment and post....
The Internet is a great tool to get the word out and by the looks of things, you get a great amount of response. I noticed most of the comments favor your agenda, so if you do follow through with your "3 Day" rule, then you will have proven my point, that money is what motivates. Is your time worth that much that you would be willing to forego the spreading of the gospel via the Blog?
All I want is the deceptive words be taken out. People who are ignorrant of what the Internet has to offer may be deceived by those words.
Thanks again for your time.
Michael
Michael, I think the poster mentioning the Playboy "name the religious right" contest was making that very point...that the religious right's practices are akin to those of organized crime.
I don't believe it was meant to say that Playboy's practices are such. Hugh Hefner never struck me as the Don Corleone type...
I read a good many blogs that I have found through this link and others. I have never found one with comments that were so obnoxious as the ones that the SBC's post on this blog. If you don't like what Bruce posts don't read his blog. Don't you have anything to do with your life but attack Bruce. Yes, this is a posting saying don't pick on my son.
